Catalytic converters

It looks like we may be having a catalytic converter issue with a friends 2000. If I eliminate the guts of the Cats will that cause the computer to freak out? We live in a non emission state so no worries there. I have pulled the guts out of cats in a couple of other rigs that were plugged before but they were earlier models than this that didnt rely on the computer as much as some of the newer cars do.

No catalytic converters will probably turn your CEL on and give you P0420 and P0421 codes. These can be eliminated by using anti-foulers or "off-road only" O2 sensor extenders...

I checked the rear cat and one of the 6 studs was broken. The rear cat was not plugged. SO 2 of the 3 cats were checked and you can see light through both. I will have to take off the alternator and try to drill out whats left of that stud. Looks like I can get one of those 90* angle adapters for my drill between the head and the firewall. I also found a crack on the manifold inside the heat shields. So now I have to weld up the cracks and put those covers back on the manifold.

Heres the deal. The inside of the exhaust is black and powdery. Im thinking that after I get those exhaust leaks fixed and I get the plenum off to change the plugs I will have to look at the throttle body. (I know not to wire brush it clean.) I will need to clean the plenum / throttle body no doubt because there has been no maint. done on this rig in 7 years that I know of. No plugs and few oil changes. Im wanting to get a good look at those plugs. I think that they may be the original ones. The gal that owns the van says she has not had anything done to it since she has owned it. Roughly 7 years. I will pay attention to each hole as I pull the plugs so I know if there are certain holes that were not firing. If the plugs and cleaning dont get rid of that nasty miss then I may also need to look into the coil pack.

Any suggestions on what might cause a miss and power drain if its not fire related?

Depending on exactly where that crack was and how big it was, this MIGHT have caused the oxygen sensor(s) to misread the amount of oxygen remaining in the exhaust flow, which would have caused the computer to add more fuel, leading to a RICH running condition - with poor gas mileage, possible misfires, and probably causing a buildup of black carbon here and there and elsewhere. So after fixing the cracks and replacing the plugs or whatever, it might be a good idea to do a general decarbonizing of the engine, using Seafoam or some other good cleaning agent. However, just fixing the cracks may cause a noticeable improvement.
