Recently, both the 'ABS' and 'Brake' light (the light which comes on when the emergency brake is engaged) began to illuminate on my '02 LX with over 5k miles after driving a few miles down the road. I took it in and the dealer diagnosis was 'right rear brake sensor defective'. They claimed to have replaced the sensor and the lights no longer illuminate for no apparent reason.
FWIW, when the ABS is in operation in the MPV, the ABS light does not illuminate, as was the case in other vehicles I've owned. The ABS light is only there for those times when the ABS malfunctions.
I find this disconcerting and wish the ABS light would illuminate not only when there is a problem with the ABS system, but also on those rare occasions when the ABS is actually in operation, much in the same way that the 'Brake' light works both when the emergency brake is engaged and also when there is a problem with the brake system. Well, if you live in the snowbelt, the ABS light would be lit very often. I've never been in a car that had the ABS light turn on when the ABS is 'in use.' The reason that you feel feedback pulses in the brake pedal, when the ABS is actuating, is so that you know it's working, which negates the need for the ABS light illuminating, and possibly distracting a driver in a panic or dangerous situation.
Another time that the ABS light would illuminate would be if all four tires locked up at once... an almost impossible situation. Say you were on a frozen lake and were able to accomplish this w/the van sliding. The ABS light would turn on b/c the ECU would be confused... why'd the van decelerate so quickly w/o another system (airbags) triggering an alarm? I had this happen on my Contour SE... on a frozen lake. The dealer said they'd never seen it before. |

I agree with Java that any lights on the dash illuminated during what may be a panic situation would be distracting at best, and a huge slam to one's confidence, both in the vehicle's ability to stop and in the driver's ability to stay in control. In the more than a few instances where I have had to perform avoidance maneuvers (I drive in Boston a lot), my attention was focused far away from my instrument panel. The pulsing you feel and the grinding you hear from the ABS are your assurance that the system is working. Just stomp on the pedal and turn that wheel. NED ROTHSTEIN

Okay, maybe the ABS light illuminating during operation isn't that great of an idea, but I'd still rather have the light go on momentarily than have the grinding/groaning sound to indicate that the ABS was operating.
It just doesn't seem that smooth or seamless and until I understood it, the brake noise is more distracting and makes me think there is something wrong with the brakes a lot more than the ABS light illuminating momentarily would. '06 Toyota Prius, Pkg #2, Seaside Pearl/Grey |

Has anyone had both the abs and ebrake light come on? This happned to me on christmas day when the sky opened up and decided to dump 26"
inches. I was trying to make it up this hill and it was just so much snow that i kept slipping and then when I hit the brakes and slid down the hill a little it turned on, but it went away the same day after turning the car off and on later on that day. Is this anything I should worry about? 01 mpv es silver 4 seasons/ luxury package

Ampa, I'd have to reference the technical manual, but in the meantime, you should check the brake fluid level. |

Perhaps some snow/ice got onto the abs sensor(s)? And when you started it later, it had melted enough of it away? Just a thought...
Still check the fluids. Does OBDII keep track of abs/brake light events, or just CE stuff?

Both my ABS and ebrake light came on at the same time for no apparent reason. I would turn the vehicle off, then back on, and the lights would go out, but a few miles down the road would both come back on again.
The dealer said it was the right rear brake sensor and it was replaced under warranty. So far, the problem has not resurfaced. '06 Toyota Prius, Pkg #2, Seaside Pearl/Grey |

Amparador,
It sounds like you've managed to lock all 4 wheels simultaneously. See Java's quote:

If that's the case, then having the ABS light come on is normal. |

My 2000 MPV (32,000km) had a recurring problem with the Brake and ABS lights on. First time that I took it in, the service tech found moisture in the ABS module. He assured me that drying out the module would solve the problem. I went out, got into the car and guess what - the brake and ABS lights were on (I was still at the dealer)!. I left the car at the dealer for another 3 days (!@!%$%$). This time, after drying out the ABS module again (where was the water coming from?) and then keeping the car for a full 3 days, the tech assured me that all was well. About 3 weeks later, both lights came back on again. Afer much arguing and a bit of threatening, this time I received a loaner car and many assurances that the dealer had never seen this problem before. After consultation with Mazda Canada, the dealer came up with the fix: moisture was getting under the hood due to a faulty seal. This time they replaced the ABS module and also replaced my wiper linkage (didn't know that I had a problem with the wiper linkage). The whole thing sounded a bit fishy. Did a bit more research online and came up with the following TSB from this site:
Water entering into engine compart: http://www.mpvclub.com/tsb.php?id=5
ABS and Brake lights haven't come back on again. |
