Anyone out there paint the outside of their brake calipers and drums?
I have seen it done (usually on cars with lots of neon bulbs attached ). I don't want to paint them fluorescent orange or anything, but I'm thinking that the alloy wheels are very open and I'd hate to see ugly rusted brake parts ruining the look of my shiny MPV. Some high temperature black and a clear coat on top could look good.
Any thoughts, or am I worrying about nothing? '02 Midnight Blue Mica MPV LX

Not really worrying about too much, but it is easy to do. Did the same thing on my MX-6, just take the brake pads off, clean with a good stiff wire brush, tape off what you don't want sprayed, and hit it with a couple of coats of high-temp paint. Don't bother with clear, just find high-temp gloss black. -Dean

Thanks for the info. There's a few "special brake paint" kits out there, which I assumed were rip-offs. Glad to hear from someone who used regular stuff. How long did it last on the MX-6?
Also, I saw a few different heat ratings for high-temp paints, some 4-500, and some 800+ degrees. Do you see any need to go that high? '02 Midnight Blue Mica MPV LX

Only if you plan on rallying in your MPV! If you want more discussion of this than you can handle, check the forums at miata.net. Regular paint apparently works fine, even for the guys that do track days. Unless you tow big loads down mountains, you'll never heat up your brakes as much as they do.
If the MPV had rear discs (like it really should, IMO), I'd think about painting my calipers. The rear drums kind of spoil the effect. Vanessa - 2002 MPV LX, Coastal Blue

Knowing a little bit about paint, I am suprised that regular paint holds up on calipers. I acutally used gloss engine paint on mine, I don't know what temp. it's rated for, but I'll check the can when I get a chance. I guess you could use regular paint if you didn't want red, black, GM orange or Ford blue on your calipers.
Also, there's nothing preventing you from painting the drums as well. My rear drums are looking a little rusty, I was thinking of getting after them with a wire brush and black paint next time I rotate the tires. I'll probably use satin black instead of gloss, though.
Oh, and the calipers on the MX-6 still look fine, it's been at least 2 years since I've done it. Just clean them off with a soft scrub brush and some Simple Green + water solution when you rotate the tires. -Dean

I concur with Billiam on wanting rear disc for the MPV. I suppose it doesn't really need it from a braking performance viewpoint, but it sure would make brake jobs easier and look better. I've been meaning to paint my rear drums too - they're pretty ugly behind the alloys. Obviously Mazda cheaped out on the factory paint job. My Honda had rear drums and they looked fine. The front calipers on my MPV look fine btw. |

You can paint your brake calipers whatever colour you like; however, you must be careful not to get any paint on the brake discs.
