Hi

I bought this MPV 2002 V6 3.0 L just over 2 years ago with 205,000 miles. Now it has 218,000 miles.

Mostly used this van for 3 really long trips of about 3000 miles each. Running good, except the transmission jerks while shifting from 1 to 2, just after it starts moving - about 10 mph.

Sometimes it bumps really hard, but if I move out really slowly from start, then the jerk becomes less pronounced.

No other issues with transmission or engine.

The check engine light came on last year. Since I could not decode the error from Auto Zone, and since the dealer wanted 139.00 just to diagnose, I gave it a pass. Later I replaced the cap for the fuel tank with a new one, on a suggestion from Firestone, and the check engine light went out for good.

Earlier, the van had an oil leak from the oil pan as well as a leak from the timing chain cover, where the seal was leaking. The timing chain cover seal and oil pan were both replaced, setting me back by $1200.00. But the leak is fully stopped now.

Otherwise the van seems to be running good for its age.

The reason for today's post is that I plan to tow a UHaul trailer 9x5 end of Aug on another long trip ( 1400 miles one way ) as my daughter is moving from Denver to south Oregon.

Should I trust this van to pull a trailer for 1400 miles ? My previous 3 trips were without trailer.

Q 1. What would be the prognosis for the upcoming trip with trailer ? I really do not want to get stranded on the way with a trailer.

Q 2. Also are there any MPV vans out there in the forum with very high miles ? I would be interested to know if the MPV remains reliable till 300 k or so ?

I had thought of selling this and buying newer model Honda Odyssey, but the MPV is good to drive- I like the steering feedback. Also I removed both middle seats and pulled out the 3 rd row as well, and I and my wife use it as a camper occasionally. I will post a photograph of how I converted it into a camper. the conversion is not a very professional job, but the two of us have stayed out quite a few nights and liked the experience.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Our 2000 is around 380 K miles and running strong ... except for the ac. Which, being down, has it mostly parked as I don't have time just now to intervene and repair. It'll again become a daily driver IF, I can get to the ac repair, OR we get some cooler weather.

I did do a engine "overhaul" at around 200K, but it was mostly an exercise in
my wondering what I was doing. No real repairs necessary, which surprised me. Was a chance to replace gaskets.

Check your switch! They go bad/rust in the back (known issue for a lot of Mazdas). My Protege and MPV had this issue (AC light would flicker).

Also, there is a cable snap issue that disconnects and doesn't move the flap for cold/hot air (behind dash).

First I would make sure the compressor goes on....

As for transmission. Just change the fliter/fluid every 60-100k. My transmission has been slipping 2-3 shift for over 2 years and 20k miles (knock on wood).

I keep towing with it regardless hehe

Oh I know what the problem with the ac is : ME! I was installing reman compressor (and replacement pressure switch) .... and after doing a leak check pump down, I just overfilled with refrigerant .... I knew better!!!, I was just determined to put in as much as I could to cover for future leaks. Well, I overfilled and something underneath blew! ... I think a connector or hose. Just haven't looked yet.

Thanks for the above information. About a year ago, i saw an advt in Denver Craigslist of an MPV doing 375 k and seller claiming that it is still running very good, so I guess these are basically reliable vehicles.

Yes I changed the transmission fluid when I purchased the van at 205 k miles. However it was just a drain and refill. Also added some transmission additive to help improve transmission life, ( purchased from O'reilly Auto parts. ) Not changed the transmission filter yet.
